Where to Stay on Elbow Cay & Hope Town

Last updated: October 2026

The best place to stay on Elbow Cay depends on how you want to spend your days. Stay in Hope Town village to walk to shops and the harbour, around White Sound for surf beaches, marinas and resort restaurants, or at the quieter north and south ends for seclusion. Most visitors rent a private house and a golf cart.

The four areas of Elbow Cay at a glance

Elbow Cay is about five miles long and never more than a short walk wide, so nowhere is truly far from anywhere else. What changes from one end to the other is the feel: a walkable village at the north, a resort-and-marina hub in the middle, and quiet residential stretches at both tips.

Staying in Hope Town village

The settlement wraps around the harbour at the north of the island, facing the candy-striped lighthouse. It is the place to stay if you want to walk everywhere: the grocery stores, the coffee shop, the dockside restaurants, and the ferry are all within a few minutes on foot. The trade-off is space. Village cottages are charming but compact, lots are small, and because carts are banned from the historic centre you will carry your beach gear rather than drive it.

Staying around White Sound

White Sound is the middle of the island and its second hub. The sheltered sound side has marinas, boat rentals and a second ferry dock; the ocean side is a long run of Atlantic surf beach. The Abaco Inn, Firefly Sunset Resort and Sea Spray Resort & Marina are all here, so you have restaurants and sunset bars without going into town. Houses in this stretch tend to be larger, with room for pools and decks, and Hope Town is a short golf-cart ride north while Tahiti Beach is a short ride south.

This is where Catch A Wave sits: on the Atlantic side near White Sound, steps from the surf beach, a one-minute walk from Sea Spray Marina and about two minutes by cart from the Abaco Inn.

Staying at the south end, near Tahiti Beach

South of White Sound the road narrows and the island gets quieter until it ends at Tahiti Beach, the palm-lined sandbar that appears at low tide. Staying down here puts the calmest, shallowest water on the island at your door, which families with small children love. You are also the furthest from the village, so most guests stock the kitchen well and treat a trip into Hope Town as an outing.

Staying at the North End

Above the village the island runs on as a quiet residential stretch of private homes. It suits travellers who want privacy and do not mind riding into town for everything. There is very little commercial activity here, which is exactly the appeal.

Rental house or resort room?

Elbow Cay has no large hotels. Your choice is between a handful of inns and small resorts, such as Hope Town Inn & Marina, the Abaco Inn and Firefly Sunset Resort, and a private rental house. Most visitors, and nearly all families and groups, choose a house.

What to look for in an Elbow Cay rental

  • Which water you are on: the Atlantic side has surf and long walking beaches, the sound side is calm and better for paddleboards and small boats.
  • A pool. When the ocean is rough or the kids are done with sand, a private pool saves the afternoon. A fenced pool matters if you are travelling with little ones.
  • Air conditioning in every bedroom, and reliable WiFi if anyone needs to work.
  • Golf cart access and parking at the house. You will almost certainly rent a cart.
  • Distance to a marina or dock if you plan to rent a boat or book a fishing charter.
  • A properly equipped kitchen. Groceries are island-priced and most guests cook several nights.
  • Who you are dealing with. Renting directly from an owner usually means faster answers and real local advice.

What do Elbow Cay vacation rentals cost?

Rates vary widely with size, season and location. As a rough guide, small one-bedroom cottages start around $300 a night, and larger beachfront homes run to $1,000 a night or more in high season. Catch A Wave, a three-bedroom, two-bath house with a private pool that sleeps six (up to eight), starts around $580 a night. Listing platforms such as VRBO and Airbnb add a traveller service fee on top of the nightly rate, so the same house often costs less when you book it directly with the owner.

When to book

Book earlier than you think. Looking at our own reservations over the years, the typical guest books about four to five months before arrival, and many book six months or more ahead. February through July is our busiest stretch, with June and July the fullest, and the most popular weeks are usually taken months ahead. Late summer and autumn are quieter and easier to book at shorter notice, though that is also hurricane season, so travel insurance is worth having.
